Des Moines Date Night, Only Better

It has been MONTHS since I've had a date night with my husband. COVID has had us indoors and dealing with things for too long and we were ready for some time alone. We headed over to Orient, Iowa to enjoy The Wallace Center's Pizza on the Prairie this last Friday and it would be rude to not share our experience with you. Pizza on the Prairie has every great ingredient for a wonderful date night covered: good food, yummy drinks, lovely music, and a little adventure all rolled into one.

Orient is just a short jaunt from Des Moines and we enjoyed looking at the beautiful rolling plains of farmland and windmills on the way. The Wallace Center has cared for the COVID pandemic by instilling great safety policies. You need to reserve your arrival time online, wear masks, and social distance. None of this impeded on our great date night. This is a great place for families and groups as well as couples. There is limited seating indoors and plenty of space outdoors. There are some picnic tables scattered outside but I recommend bringing your own lawn chairs or a lawn blanket to enjoy your own space while on the prairie.

So let's get into it. How was the pizza? The pizza was amazing. So fresh and incredibly delicious. We ordered the classic Margherita pizza along with the weekly special, BBQ Pork. Flavor on flavor on flavor.

Oh. My. Goodness. Freaking good. We had a chance to speak with the chefs for the evening and they decide the menu based on what the farm is harvesting that week. All the ingredients are sourced locally or right from the farm. While we ate, we were serenaded by the music of local Logan Porter. It was the perfect setting.

For dessert, we had the cherry brownie ice cream sandwich and the cheddar apple crisp. These are desserts that dreams are made from, friends. We didn't look cute eating them. I'm sure we looked like starved zombies because we gobbled them up before I thought to grab a cute photo to share with you. I'm sorry I'll do better next time.

When we were done eating we took a stroll around the prairie to look at the Prairie Art Exhibit including paintings from local artists of all ages. I wasn't excited about walking through the prairie but I'm glad I did. It was beautiful. There were lots of little surprising pieces of art and a whole lot of land to bask in.

Rain was in the forecast and my hair was falling flat, so we decided to head home in case a "little weather" turned into a Derecho Hurricane again. We give this experience a 10/10 and will definitely be back. They have Pizza on the Prairie every Friday night through September 25.

Be sure to check out The Wallace Center online and on social media.

Thanks for tuning in!

Sarah
